This beautiful piece of art work is by Gustave Courbets made in the years 1843-45. This piece is explained to show a tortured man struggling for recognition and a bite to eat. While first looking at the piece the first thing that comes to eye is the way the man is looking straight at the viewers, in a worried some wide eyed look. Making the viewer think he is desperately looking for something he needs. Also what comes to eye is how he is grabbing his hair, in arts you may think the artist is just portraying the man running his hands through his hair, but in this piece you can see how in his arms the veins are popping out of his arms as though he is actually gripping the hair and pulling on it, in a stressed way. You can also see his clothes, they aren't exactly super messy, but they are not super nice. He is in some struggle with the way his clothes are looking just by seeing his clothes being portrayed in the art piece.

The colors in this piece of art work by Gustave Courbets is very well put together. The background is warmer colors, I believe this is so it is not the main focus of the art piece, the warm colors keep the background from taking the attention off the man in the self portrait. The colors in the background are warmer looking colors, but the colors on the man make him pop out of the art piece to convey a eye attention grabber. The colors of his sleeves are a bright white color that leads to his arm which are grabbing onto his hair pulling it. His arms and hands are portrayed to be in sunlight, believing to be so you notice how he his grabbing onto his hair. Looking more directly at the front face of the portrait his face is almost shaded, but sticks out the colors in his face are almost looking pale in the warm shadowing colors of his face. Looking into his eyes you can see all the white around his eyes pointing out that he his wide eyed staring directly into the viewers eyes in a begging, desperate way.

There is not really any lines in this art piece except for in the sleeves and on his arms being able to point out his veins and the wrinkles in bis shirt. With this being said the texture of this piece is very smoothly laid out compared to other art pieces, I believe this was painted with very smooth strokes of a paint brush.

  1. Hi Lacie, I could agree more with you about the first thing that grabs you is the way the man is looking straight into the viewers eyes. This really pulls you into the painting and makes you examine it more. The bright white of the sleeves and his arms really frame his face and is a stark contrast to the darker colors of the background. I also agree that the painting was made with very smooth strokes of the brush giving it a realistic look. I really like that you picked this, and I think you did a great job explaining how you view this painting.

  2. Hi Lacie! I think you did a great job at explaining this piece of artwork to us. One part that really stood out to me was when you were talking about the guy having his hands in his hair. When I looked at this artwork, I did not notice that his veins were popping out of his arms. I thought he was just running his hands through his hair. I know you said that this painting was probably painted with smooth strokes of a paintbrush, but can we tell what kind of paint was used? Like was it watercolor or acrylic? I think you did a great job with this analysis!
